We recently picked up a couple of Vintage Sullivan banjos and boy are they beauties. Both of these early Sullivans came to us from one of our long time customers whose decided to concentrate his time on his guitar playing. One banjo is a first generation Festival with the torch on the peghead and the simple dot inlay pattern. The other banjo is a highly flamed curly maple Greenbriar. The customer ordered both these banjos in a natural blonde finish and both were made by request with highly figured necks and resonator. Both banjos have Price straight line tailpieces and are in excellent condition (the armrests do show slight wear). Give us a call and we can discuss, they surely won’t be here long.
We would like to share with you a very nice used instrument we have for sale here at First Quality Music. Tony is picking you a tune on a Tennessee Crafters Signature Series Mahogany banjo. This banjo has a beautiful quilted mahogany resonator and engraved gold hardware. Comes with a hard rock 3-ply rim and a Tennessee 20 tone ring, all crafted by Mark Taylor down in Nashville Tennessee. This instrument is in excellent condition, give us a call at 800-635-2021 to discuss.
Yes … Happy Holidays. It is not too soon to begin practicing for those holiday parties.
Our friend David Jakubiak at www.fretmentor.com has recently released Fretmentor’s Acoustic Holiday – 12 Songs of Christmas for Banjo, Guitar, Mandolin and Fiddle. This music collection is one of kind, since it provides entire standardized arrangements of Christmas tunes for all acoustic instruments, which is ideal for individuals and bands alike.
Fretmentor’s Acoustic Holiday Christmas Collection has taken a year and a half to complete. It consists of both standard musical notation and tablature for 12 Christmas tunes. These songs especially are written for acoustic instruments but can of course be played by other instruments as well. You can view the list of 12 songs by going to the fretmentor library or clicking on this link to the fretmentor library:
All songs are now in the new Tef format and can be played in computer generated midi format. With the free Tabledit Tef viewer, you will be able to hear the tabs and standard musical notation exactly as it is written. You can even slow the tempo of each song to play along with it as you are learning. All chords are provided for you to also play the rhythm along with the lead. In addition, lyrics to each song are provided.
The entire collection of songs is $35.00 (additional $1.00 charge if paying by paypal). That is approximately $2.91 per song. You can pay by personal check or Paypal. Once authorized, you can download each song to your computer. Instructions on how to download the Free Tef view program will also be provided. In addition, any updates (including video or instructional audio files) that may be provided in the future will be accessible to you as well. Please contact Fretmentor via email for further ordering instructions.
We at First Quality Music and http://www.fretmentor.com/ wish you all in advance, a happy holiday and happy picking.

Nathan Livers stopped by today and checked out our Gibson Old Growth Mandolin prototype. We’ve been working closely with Dave Harvey at Gibson Original Bluegrass to put this mandolin together out of the same factory floor wood that has been so successful in our Sullivan Banjo wood rim and bridges. The mandolin just got back from being test driven by Herschel Sizemore, a great mandolin player and a good friend of ours. Rumor has it that our prototype may be featured on a cut or two from his upcoming album. Stay tuned for more information to follow about the exciting mandolin project.
Nathan drop by to get some picks today and roped him in to playing a couple tunes with Murrell Thixton our resident Bluegrass Specialist. Nathan formerly played with James Monroe , Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers and Charlie Lawson & Oak Hill. He is currently forming a group with Murrell (more on that later!). If you like what you hear, Nathan will be teaching here at First Quality Music in the near future. Call us at 502-995-5651 ext. 7124 for more information!
